Ginosa, nestled in the captivating Tarantine Murgia, is a true jewel of history and nature. Known as the “Gateway to the Gravinas”, this town offers an irresistible combination of breathtaking landscapes, ancient cave dwellings, and a historic center rich in traditions. Visiting Ginosa is like stepping into a place where time seems to stand still, delivering a unique experience in the heart of Apulia.
The Origins of Ginosa: A Journey Through Time
Ginosa’s origins date back to the Bronze Age. Its territory was inhabited by the Peucetians, an indigenous population that used the gravinas to create troglodyte settlements, which are still visible today. During the Roman period, Ginosa became an important stopover on the routes connecting the Apulian hinterland to the Ionian coast.
In the Middle Ages, the town gained strategic importance under the Normans and later the Angevins, who built the majestic Norman Castle, a symbol of feudal power. Ginosa thus became a vital center for territorial control and the protection of local communities.
The Gravina of Ginosa: A Natural Masterpiece
The beating heart of the town is the Gravina of Ginosa, a deep karst canyon that houses ancient troglodyte villages, rock-hewn churches, and remnants of rural life. Among the most fascinating sites are the Rupestrian Church of Saint Leonard and the Church of Saint Sophia, adorned with Byzantine frescoes that reflect a deeply rooted and intense spirituality.
Walking along the gravina offers a unique experience, combining the wonder of nature with the discovery of a past carved in stone.
The Historic Center: Between Alleys and Traditions
Ginosa’s historic center is a maze of cobblestone alleys, stone arches, and whitewashed houses overlooking the gravina. At its center stands the Norman Castle, an imposing structure that dominates the landscape and tells centuries of history.
Must-see landmarks include the Mother Church of Saint Martin, a baroque masterpiece with a majestic bell tower, and Piazza Orologio, the vibrant heart of the town's social life.
Nature and Beaches
Just a few kilometers from the town center, the coastline of Marina di Ginosa boasts fine sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for those looking to combine history and relaxation. The nearby Regional Park of the Gravinas also offers excellent opportunities for trekking and outdoor excursions.

La Processione dei Misteri
The Processione dei Misteri on Good Friday in Ginosa is one of the most evocative and moving events of Holy Week. During this solemn celebration, the simulacra depicting the moments of Christ's Passion are carried on the shoulders of a group of bearers, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality and contemplation.
A unique feature of the procession is the Coro delle Pie Donne, composed of around one hundred devout women who, accompanied by the town band of Ginosa, sing traditional Holy Week hymns throughout the entire route. Passione Vivente "Passio Christi"
The Passione Vivente "Passio Christi" in Ginosa is an extraordinary event that combines religious tradition with cultural significance. Thanks to the collaboration with the University of Bari, the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Puglia, the Pontifical Council for Culture, and the International Europassio Organization, this sacred representation has gained international recognition, preserving the city's historical and cultural heritage.
The event takes place in a unique setting: the Rione Casale, nestled within the gravina, which transforms into a true open-air natural theater. Squares, illuminated by tripod flames, host performers dressed in period costumes who re-enact the most significant moments of Jesus' life, from the Annunciation to the Crucifixion. Enriched by narrators and musical accompaniments, the event provides an unforgettable theatrical and spiritual experience.
The Gravina di Ginosa, with its landscape reminiscent of the Palestinian environment, transforms the Passio Christi into an immersive and moving event, attracting visitors from across Italy and Europe each year. The representation was even mentioned by Pope John Paul II during the Audience on May 21, 1997, emphasizing its spiritual and cultural value.
