The Arciconfraternita of Our Lady of Sorrows, founded by Royal Decree on 15th May 1832 and raised in rank as Arciconfraternita on 14th may 1855 hosts in the baroque chapel of St. Riccardo, also known as “Cappellone”, built for such purpose in 1887 by the brother Earl Onofrio Spagnoletti-Zeuli, the Statue of Our Virgin of Sorrows, completed in 1840 and donated by the noble family Jannuzzi. The statue, made of polychrome wood carved by skilful Neapolitan sculptors, is collocated on the Arciconfraternita altar.
The Madonna is represented as sorrowfully grieving for her child with tears on her cheek, holding a handkerchief in her right hand and with a dagger piercing her heart. On Holy Thursday the “Cappellone” hosts also the ceremony of the covered pyx in accordance with liturgical norms: the Arciconfraternita led by the ecclesiastical assistant organizes this rite.
