A town of over 22,000 inhabitants in the province of Taranto. Its origins are ancient, first as a Greek then a Barbarian garrison. From the second century BC in Genusia it showed the great strength of the Roman Empire, becoming a præsidium for its strategic position. The prosperity of Genusia Romana was evident up to the 4th century AD. The town was designed and built like a medieval village, carved out of the rock of the tufa slopes of the ravine. Today the ravines are an evocative scene, and in ancient times they represented places of refuge for the populations. Numerous archaeological finds bear witness to the succession of various ethnicities. The unique treasure of the city is the Castello, constructed at the end of 400 to defend against continuous Saracen raids, even today it dominates the town with its imposing mass. From a tourist perspective it is included in the oasis of protection of the Puglia Region, and is also one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Ionian Coast. To visit: Castello del Guiscardo, the many farms that are examples of rural architecture, the “Rivolta” rock village.
