The spiritual father and Curia’s bursar Don Domenico Isaia founded the Confraternity of Purgatorio under the title of the Holy Virgin of Monte Carmelo in 1687. When it was founded, the confraternity of the Purgatorio was composed of 29 brothers and four noble novices belonging to noble or well-off families of the town.
Thanks to some accurate historical researches, we know that the confraternity had existed long before 1687. In 1684, indeed, Monsignor Pignatelli while visiting Pulsano and its churches wrote that the altar of the Holy Cross belonged to the Confraternity.
The Confraternity has witnessed a constant growth across centuries becoming the core of the social, cultural, and religious life of Pulsano.
The religious ceremonies related to the Confraternity are the celebration of Madonna del Carmine on 16th July and the rites of Holy week that find in the procession of Holy Friday the most touching expression.
