At 4:00 a.m. before the start of the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Confraternity lives a moment of prayer reserved exclusively to the brethren and the devotee-bearers who are going to participate to the procession. The prayer is chaired by the parish priest, Father Gianni Cafagna, and takes place in the Parish Church, with the lights out, around the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows illuminated by the statue’s spotlights and the lit candles which have been distributed to all the brethren and devotee-bearer and sees the participation of thousands of faithful, who are waiting outside on the square opposite the parish church.
At 4:50 in an atmosphere of complete silence and emotion with the public lights surrounding the Parish completely off, the strident sound of the troccola, carried in procession in turn by the youngest brethren, starts the procession, followed by the penitential Cross bearing the signs of Jesus' passion and the devotee-bearers and brethren.
At 5:00 a.m. the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows exits, accompanied by the funeral march "Eterno Dolore" (Eternal Pain) by master Quatrano, which is particularly loved to Corato's inhabitants. The first section of the procession, before the dim light of dawn, takes place completely in the dark with the streets illuminated only by the lit candles carried in procession by the devotee-bearers and the brethren.
At 10:30 The procession of Our Lady of Sorrows returns in the Parish Church.
At 18:00 with the exit of the black Palio, accompanied by the notes of the "Stabat Mater" by Gioacchino Rossini, winds, again from the Parish Church of St. Joseph, the procession of the Mysteries which consists of nine statues, in the following order: Jesus in Gethsemane (carried in procession by the Unitalsi, Italian National Union for Transport of the Sick to Lourdes and International Shrines), St. Peter with the rooster (it is a real embalmed rooster, carried in procession by the Association Saint Bernadette and the Confraternity of Mercy), Jesus at the Column (carried in procession by the Confraternity of Purgatory), Ecce Homo (carried in procession by the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Greca), Jesus with the Cross (carried in procession by the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary), Veronica (carried in procession by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), the Calvary (carried in procession by the Confraternity of Immaculate Conception), Dead Jesus (carried in procession by the Association Madonna of the Well and the Confraternity of Saint Joseph) and Our Lady of Sorrows (carried in procession by the devotee-bearers of the Confraternity of Saint Joseph).
At 18:20 or so, once the first seven mysteries (from Jesus in Gethsemane to the Calvary) have been come out in procession, from the Parish Church the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows comes out and stops, outside, on the churchyard side, and waits for the release of the eighteenth century statue in polychrome lime wood Dead Jesus, and then it lines up in procession behind it. You live a very impressive situation that takes place without the sound of funeral marches, in an atmosphere of complete silence and composure with only the drum rolling and is experienced by thousands of faithful who fill the square in front of the Parish Church.
At 21:30 the characteristic path begins across the streets of the historic center with the public lights completely off and illuminated only by the dim light of candles placed on all balconies and cornices of the concerned streets. Some candles are distributed to all the brethren and devotee-bearers that participate to the procession; such candles are lit and carried in procession until the return in the Parish Church. Along the way in the streets of the Historic Center also the brethrens of the other Confraternities wearing the buffa (hat) lower it as a sign of penitence.
At 22:00 the procession arrives in Piazza Sedile where the Way of the Cross takes place, chaired by Zonal Vicar, Father Cataldo Bevilacqua, and animated by the parish communities. Every year, each statue of the Mysteries is assigned to a parish community which prepares a moment of prayer by reading a passage from the Gospel relevant to the assigned Mystery and a prayer of the faithful. As each statue arrives in the square, where a small dais is arranged with a lectern, the related Station of the Way of the Cross is read and prayed. From there, then, continuing the path with the lights off, the procession makes its way in the parish church, not far, for the return that usually takes place at about 23:00.
The last part of the procession of the Mysteries is also characteristic, with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows which is carried in procession by the parish priests, deacons and seminarians who participated in the Way of the Cross.
During the procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday, the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Greca carries in procession the statue of Ecce Homo. At 06:45 a.m. from the Parish Church of Santa Maria Greca the procession of the Pietà begins. The procession of the Pietà, like the one of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Mysteries, is received in all districts with the white sheets hung from balconies as a sign of mourning and with some lit candles.
At 11:30 a.m. the procession of the Pietà crosses via Luisa Piccarreta, a street that is adjacent to the parish church, where the statue stops, for several minutes, before the Association of the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta, where a moment of prayer takes place with the full emotion and participation of all citizens. At 12:00 the procession goes back to the Parish Church.
