25 kilometres far from Bari, Molfetta boasts an elliptic-shaped medieval old centre, built on a rocky promontory near the harbour; seven narrow and picturesque lanes cross its main street.
On the edge of the old town overlooking the sea harbour stands the Duomo, one of the most remarkable examples of the Apulian-Romanesque architecture with three cupolas built on an axis and rested on octagonal tambours.
In 2006 the town was awarded the title of ‘City of Art’. Its territory includes the Pulo, one of the biggest karstic dolines relevant for its historical, naturalistic and archeological value.
Among the town monuments, worth visiting are the stately Torrione Passeri built in the sea, the ancient Ospedale dei Crociati, Hospital of the Crusaders, alongside the Basilica of the Madonna dei Martiri, together with many Gothic and Renaissance churches.
Molfetta is very rich in traditions and events all year round. Very important is the sea festival on 8th September, which still calls back many people of Molfetta origins scattered all around the world as well as tourists from everywhere.
Gastronomy is another virtue of this land. Its architectural beauty is exalted by an excellent cuisine of local products, many of which have been awarded with DOP and IGP recognition.
